Your G2 and Capterra ratings are no longer just social proof on a pricing page; they are the source material for the recommendation engine your future customers actually trust.

The G2 and Capterra ecosystem just got smaller
In late 2025, G2 announced its acquisition of Capterra, Software Advice, and GetApp from Gartner. The four largest software review properties in the B2B world now sit under one roof. For software vendors, this collapses something that used to require separate strategies into a single one. The reviews you collect, the way you respond to them, and the language buyers use to describe your product now feed into a more coordinated discovery layer.
That matters because the discovery layer is no longer humans typing queries into Google. According to G2's 2026 research, 71 percent of B2B software buyers now use AI chatbots to research software, and 51 percent start their search there before going to Google at all. Among the people who use those chatbots daily, half of them rank a citation from a review site as the single most important trust signal in an AI-generated recommendation. The chatbots are reading your reviews. So you should be reading them more carefully than you used to.
What G2 and Capterra audiences actually want to know
G2 and Capterra are not the same product, even though they now share a parent. The audiences differ enough that the same review on both sites lands differently.
G2 reviewers tend to be in-the-weeds product users, weighted toward mid-market and enterprise SaaS categories. The reviews are longer, more feature-specific, and more comparative. A typical G2 review will name two competitors by the second paragraph and rate the product across ease of use, ease of setup, ease of admin, and quality of support. The structured fields exist because G2 buyers want to compare on specific dimensions before booking demos.
Capterra reviewers skew SMB and tend to be the actual buyer, not just the user. The reviews are shorter, more outcome-focused, and more likely to mention price and onboarding experience. A Capterra review reading 'it does what we need and the support team responded within an hour' carries more weight than a long technical review on the same property, because the audience is making a faster decision with less internal review.
If you are reading both feeds and treating them as the same dataset, you are missing the segmentation that is sitting in front of you. Mid-market positioning issues show up first on G2. Pricing or onboarding friction shows up first on Capterra.
The signal that hides under the star rating
A 4.5-star average rating is almost useless on its own. Most established software lives between 4.3 and 4.7 across both platforms, which means the star rating tells you you are in the same band as your competitors and not much else. The signal lives in the text.
Four categories of signal are worth tracking systematically. The first is feature mentions: which capabilities show up positively, which show up as missing, and which show up as broken. The second is segment language: whether reviewers describe themselves as an agency, a manufacturer, a healthcare provider, a 50-person team or a 5,000-person enterprise. The third is competitive context: who they considered, who they switched from, who they switched to. The fourth is lifecycle stage: whether they are describing their first week with the product, six months in, or three years in. The same review can read very differently depending on which of those it is.
Most teams stop at 'negative reviews are about support response time' and move on. That is roughly the level of analysis you would get from a tag cloud. The actually useful work is correlating those four signal categories. If your negative support reviews come almost exclusively from agency users in their first 30 days, you have an onboarding problem, not a support problem. If your missing-feature reviews skew toward 500-plus-employee accounts, you have a positioning problem.
Why the reviews you collect predict your renewal rate
There is a less-discussed reason to read your G2 and Capterra reviews carefully: they are a leading indicator of churn that your customer success team often does not see.
A customer who writes a review at month two has reached the threshold of caring enough to spend 15 minutes typing about your product on a public site. That is not nothing. But the language they use predicts how the relationship goes. Reviews that read 'great product, took us a while to figure out' almost always come from accounts that renew. Reviews that read 'great product, our team is still not sure how to use it after three months' almost never do. The difference between past tense and present tense in those sentences is often the difference between a six-figure renewal and a churn email in February.
Reading review text against your customer health score is a small project that pays off quickly. Pull the last 90 days of public reviews, match them to your CRM accounts where you can, and look at the sentiment language against the renewal status of the account. The pattern shows up faster than most CS leaders expect.
What competitor reviews tell you that your own do not
Most software companies read their own reviews and ignore everyone else's. This is backwards. Your own reviews tell you what current customers think. Competitor reviews tell you what your future customers were promised, why they are unhappy, and what they would switch for.
Three things to look for. The first is the stuck-customer review: a four-star review that praises one specific feature and complains about everything else. That is a customer who would switch but is locked in by data export friction or by a contract. They are your inbound list. The second is the 'I switched from X' review on a competitor, where X is you. The reasons given are the precise positioning vulnerabilities that your win-loss interviews will never surface, because the people doing those interviews are talking to deals you closed. The third is the feature comparison reviewer who lists what your competitor does better than you. Those reviews are gifts. They are roadmap input from people who have used both products and have no incentive to be diplomatic.
A reasonable cadence is one structured pass per quarter on your top three competitors' reviews on G2, and a lighter touch on Capterra unless you compete in SMB.
Spotting the reviews that are not what they look like
Both G2 and Capterra have invested heavily in review verification, and both filter incentivized reviews into separate buckets. But verified does not mean unbiased, and incentivized does not mean useless.
The reviews that warrant skepticism are the ones that read like marketing copy. If a review uses three of your own product page phrases verbatim, it is probably a review your enablement team helped a happy customer write. If a review uses none of them and sounds slightly grumpy about something specific, it is more likely to be genuinely useful, even if it is a four-star rating. The signal-to-noise problem is not fake reviews. It is real reviews that have been smoothed into uselessness by your own review collection process.
If you incentivize reviews, you should know what your collection tooling is doing to the review text. Most tools ask reviewers to rate first and then write. That sequence anchors the review text to the rating. Reversing it produces longer, more useful reviews and slightly lower average ratings, which is usually a fair trade.
The new buyer journey changes how reviews need to be readable
The G2 research from March 2026 found that 69 percent of B2B software buyers chose a different vendor than they originally planned based on AI chatbot guidance, and one third bought from a vendor they had never heard of. Those numbers are larger than most software marketing teams have internalized. Two thirds of buyers are willing to be talked out of their first instinct by an AI that is summarizing your reviews.
The implication is that review text now needs to be machine-readable, not just human-readable. Long reviews with concrete numbers, named use cases, and specific integrations get cited. Short reviews with abstract praise do not. If your top-of-funnel marketing is producing reviews that read 'great team, would recommend,' you are not in the citation set even if your average rating is high.
This is the most quietly important shift in B2B SaaS marketing in the last year. The audience for your G2 reviews is no longer just other buyers. It is also the model the buyer is talking to before they ever see your site.
From reading to a system
Reading a hundred reviews once a quarter is a reasonable starting point and a poor steady state. The teams that get real value out of their G2 and Capterra presence treat it as an ongoing data stream. They aggregate the reviews into the same place they keep their other voice-of-customer data. They tag by feature, segment, and lifecycle stage. They route the negative reviews to the right team within a day, not a week. And they pull review-derived themes into product reviews and marketing planning on a recurring cadence.
